Daily Dose: LinkedIn Goes Public!

LinkedIn, the popular social networking site for professionals, is going public! Selling at $45 per share, the 7.84 million shares total to an amazing $352.8 million. Originally, LinkedIn had considered offering the shares at $32-$35 per share. Soon, investors will have several social networking giants to choose from. Facebook is expected to go public sometime in 2012, with Groupon and Zynga following soon thereafter.

Google's Chrome 13 Debutes on Dev Channel

Version 13.0.767.1 of the Google Chrome OS has been published on the official Chrome developer channel. The most obvious improvements have been made to the "Print Preview" and Omnibox string matching functions. (String matching has been slow on Mac OS X and Windows 7-based systems.) More information about the Dev release channel and a list of revisions are posted on the official Google Chrome Releases blog.

New GRUB 1.99 Boots Better

Version 1.99 of the Grand Unified Bootloader, or GRUB, enables systems to be booted from Btrfs and ZFS partitions. If future events pan out as predicted, the Btrfs file system will likely be adopted as the standard for Linux. GRUB developers have also added for and while loops to the GRUB Script scripting language.

Open Virtualization Alliance Announcement Turns Heads

On May 17th, 2011, IBM, Red hat, HP, Intel, BMC Software and SUSE (among other luminaries) banded together to form the Open Virtualization Alliance. The stated goal of the alliance is to broaden the use of virtualization technologies. More pessimistic commentators have suggested that the new alliance has been formed to undermine the power of industry leaders VMWare and Citrix.  Initially, the Open Virtualization Alliance will attempt to encourage Kernal-based Virtual Machine (KVM) adaptation.
