Daily Dose: Silverlight 5 Beta Ready to Shine

Microsoft has finally released a beta version of it's popular media plugin, Silverlight 5 Beta. Users can download the beta version off of Microsoft's site.  As expected, there are tons of new features.  Microsoft's official overview lists the following major additions/improvements:

  • XAML Debugging with breakpoints for binding debugging
  • Implicit data templates for easy UI reuse
  • Double (and multi) click support
  • GPU-accelerated XNA-compatible 3D and immediate-mode 2D API
  •  Low-latency sound effects and WAV support
  • Real operating system windows and multi-display support

Hopefully an announcement about Silverlight and Xbox will be forthcoming.

Groundbreaking Solar Power Tower Goes Google

Shelling out over $168,000,000, Google has become a major investor in green technology.  The Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System, slated to be the world's largest solar power plant, will be located in the Mojave Desert. When the plant is completed, it will produce 329MW of clean energy.  Google has already invested over $250 million in green technology, and plans on advancing green initiatives in the future.

The rumors surrounding a Windows 8 app store can now be confirmed.  Here are a couple of the images leaked on the Chinese site, cnBeta:





New Ceylon JVM Language : A Java Killer?

Gavin King of Red Hat introduced the Ceylon JVM programming language  at QCon Beijing.  Initial press releases called the new language a "Java Killer."  Since, King has posted an article clearing the cloud of debate surrounding Ceylon JVM.  He states:

First, I never billed this as a Java Killer or the next generation of the Java language. Not my words. Ceylon isn't Java, it's a new language that's deeply influenced by Java, designed by people who are unapologetic fans of Java. Java's not dying anytime soon, so nothing's killing it.

A "Java Killer"?  Apparently not...

Neo4j 1.3 released, now a Graph Database with GPL v3 license and lots of other new features

Google's solar power project is not appropriate news material.......even if it is Google...and even if it is some PC topic.
