Breaking news on Wednesday evening as a press release has hit the wires containing an official letter of resignation from Steve Jobs, the CEO of Apple.  In his own words, here was what he had to say:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

The most likely reason for Jobs' seemingly final departure from Apple today is his ongoing battle with a rare form of pancreatic cancer.  Jobs had a liver transplant in 2009 as a result, taking an extended leave of absence.  He also took a leave of absence for several months this year due to health issues but was available for Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference to give the Keynote.  It was his third medical leave since being diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumor.

Jobs now ends his career with a vast list of accomplishments that have changed the face of computing technology.

Judge Rules That Samsung Violated Apple Phone Patents

A ruling was issued in Apple's patent infringement case against Samsung, which claimed that Samsung violated Apple patents with their Galaxy S, S II and Ace model smartphones in matters regarding designs and copyrights. A judge in the Hague ruled that the three Samsung smartphones would be banned from sale beginning October 13th. However, a report on Tweakers.net shows that Samsung will replace the software that encroaches on Apple's patents, which may lift the sales ban.
