Daily Dose: VMware Launches Cloud Foundry
VMware's SpringSource has just released what they are calling the first open source PaaS. With Cloud Foundry,
developers can choose their framework, app services, and can run their
creations on a variety of cloud environments. Cloud Foundry has
connectors for three backends: MySQL, Redis, and MongoDB. They can also
choose between a private, public, or hybrid environment for their
platform launch. The project has been in beta for many months, so the
site still says 'beta' but you should be able to access the GA version here.
The
widely-popular open source database management system, MySQL, has been
updated to provide even faster access to large datasets. In MySQL
Version 5.6, the number of input/output operations to the main table has
been reduced. Another feature, improved replication, will reduce data
wastage. A special, experimental feature allows developers to access
MySQL's core storage from non-relational databases. The full details of
the new release are on the MySQL site.
Pentaho Releases Version 1.0 of olap4j
olap4j,
an open-source Java API designed for use with Online Analytical
Processing (OLAP) servers, enhances interoperability across
technologies. In contrast to the standard, proprietary OLAP APIs, olap4j
1.0 will work with any OLAP server on the market. Input from several
open-source communities was incorporated into the final design of olap4j
1.0. A list of the contributing communities can be found on the
Pentaho site.

The Next Generation of Internet Explorer: IE10 Platform Preview
Although Microsoft only recently released the final version of Internet Explorer (IE) 9, a platform preview of IE10 has been released for download today. While work on the actual IE10 browser is nowhere near completion, the platform preview showcases Microsoft's dedication to creating a native HTML5 environment. IE developers are designing IE10 in an effort to build upon the progress made in IE9. To do this, they continue to improve HTML5 functionality and to avoid adding unnecessary layers and libraries. This early look at IE10 arrives only three weeks after work had officially begun on the new browser.
