A new report by the Interactive Advertising Bureau shows that online ad revenues for the third quarter of this year have dropped 5.4% from the end of last year. However, online ad revenues are up 1.7% from this year's second quarter. Online ad sales were $5.5 billion in this year's third quarter. Many companies said they saw ad sales increasing when they reported third quarter revenues. We'll have to wait and see if revenues rise again in the fourth quarter.
With the Chrome OS barely out of the gate, Phoronix decided to compare the operating system with Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10, Moblin 2.1, Fedora 12, and openSUSE 11.2 on a Samsung NC10 netbook. Phoronix tested performance and battery-life. The winner of the test was Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10. openSUSE 11.2 also performed well. Chrome OS didn't look so hot. That's to be expected though since it's not expected to ship until next year. Moblin 2.1 was also comparatively slow.
The Ulteo Open Virtual Desktop 2.0 is now available. The technology allows users to run Linux and Windows through a web browser on any device. Clients only need to enable Java. The new features of version 2.0 include authentication support for LDAP and CAS servers, support for windows, WebDAV, or Linux, compatibility with Amazon's EC2, and a brand new web portal mode.
Would you believe that Sun has built a high-performance computing system inside an old particle accelerator? Well, it's true. CLUMEQ, a supercomputing consortium, recently helped Sun build a computing system in Quebec, Canada that maximizes cooling efficiency. The project also helped preserve a scientific landmark, the Van de Graaff particle accelerator.
