Esther Derby is the president of her own agile consulting firm, Esther Derby Associates, Inc. She's doing the usual mix of workshops, coaching, and consulting as well as writing a book. Her book is about state-of-the-art management, which focuses not just on people, but work systems as well. She explains the technical and social components of work systems, and she explains the managers' roles in these systems.
Derby helps clarify what self-organizing teams are and tells us what risks are associated in certain situations. She also talks about the book she co-authored with Johanna Rothman - "Behind Closed Doors: Secrets of Great Management". Finally, Derby walks us through her process for designing Agile Retrospectives and explains her experience in motivating workers and gaining acceptance for agile adoption.
