In this interview, Johanna Rothman, the founder of Rothman Consulting Group, tells us about her role as chairman of the Agile 2009 conference and her experiences in agile consulting. She says there are still companies that don't know what their project priorities are across their portfolio, and this causes a good deal of chaos. "If your CEO's say 'everything is top priority,' what do you do?" She says people can end up taking on more responsibilities than they can handle, and jobs that are outside of their expertise.
Rothman says her book, "Manage Your Project Portfolio: Increase Your Capacity and Finish More Projects", describes the ways in which companies can rank their projects. The book also includes a chapter on Mission Statements that can help draw boundaries for what a team has to do. Staffing a project effectively is another important aspect of agile, and Rothman explains how to do this. Rothman finally looks at where Agile is as an industry, how she got out of development and into project management, and why interpersonal skills are so important.
